  • Battery
According to experts, it is advisable to replace your car battery every three to five years.
  • Distributor
If tested as faulty, it is recommended by Derby Auto Mechanics to replace both the distributor cap and rotor at the same time, regardless of their condition.
  • Alternator
Issues with the alternator can arise from worn or loose drive belts, bearings, and connector faults. In this case, alternator replacement is recommended.
  • Radiator
If your radiator is leaking, the best solution is usually to replace it with a new one. This requires the professional help that Derby Auto Mechanics can offer.
  • Thermostat
There are two common problems that occur with thermostats: they can get stuck in an open position or a closed position. Derby Auto Mechanics can replace your thermostat for you.
  • Spark plug
First, we remove the HT leads and then unscrew the plugs. Clean the area thoroughly and use feeler blades to check the electrode gap of the new plugs before screwing them back in place.
  • Ignition coil
If the vehicle has a faulty ignition coil system that fits directly onto each spark plug (also known as ‘coil per plug’ type), then it’s relatively easy to remove the coil unit by unplugging the connector. However, if the vehicle has a different type of ignition coil system, it’s a slightly bigger job.
  • Tyres
If a tyre is flat, then we need to prepare the car for changing the tyre. Begin by positioning the wheelchocks to ensure the car does not move. Next, loosen the wheel nuts using a wrench. Then, jack the car up to raise it off the ground. Carefully remove the flat tyre and replace it with the spare wheel. Once this is done, lower the car back down and tighten the bolts securely. Fully lower the car to the ground and check the spare tyre pressure to ensure it’s safe to drive on. Finally, we will take the punctured tyre to a tyre repair shop to get it fixed.
  • Spare tyre
If your spare wheel needs replacing we will take the spare wheel and get it fitted with a new tyre for you.
  • Brakes
Here are the necessary steps to repair your car’s brake system:
    – Level the brake disks by shaving them.
    – Replace the disk pads.
    – Replace the brake fluid lines and the brake fluid.
    – Bleed the brakes.
    – Replace the brake sensor and the sensor cables.
    – Replace the brake light bulbs or LEDs and the fitting.
  • Catalytic converter
To replace a faulty catalytic converter on your vehicle, first, we raise the car high enough for our mechanic to slide underneath and work comfortably.
Then, we disconnect and remove the O2 sensors from the catalytic converter. The bad catalytic converter may be either clamped or bolted in place, or welded into the exhaust pipe, depending on your vehicle’s design. Once removed, we clean the flanges on the manifold/muffler/exhaust pipe using a sanding block or gasket cleaner.
Next, we fit and secure a new catalytic converter, ensuring that you buy the correct part based on your car’s make, model, and year. Finally, we restart your car and check for any leaks or noises.
  • Shock absorbers
If your car vibrates, clonks, or drifts to one side while braking, it could be due to problems with your shock absorbers and therefore we recommend getting them checked as soon as possible. Derby Auto Mechanics will check and fix or replace faulty shock absorbers.
  • Clutch
To remove and inspect the clutch, we will park the car in a secure location and jack up the front part of the car.
Once this is done, we disconnect the battery, the clutch cable, the shift linkage, and the speedometer cable to get the transaxle ready for removal.
After that, we unbolt the engine mount and lower the engine a little to access the clutch.
Next, we remove the clutch pressure plate and inspect the clutch disc for any wear and tear. If we find any, in best practice, we will replace the clutch disc.
Additionally, we check the flywheel for any cracks or damage and resurface or replace it as necessary.
Once we have done all of this, we reattach the transaxle and the engine mount and reconnect all the cables and linkages.
Finally, we release the car jack and test the clutch operation to make sure everything is working correctly.
  • Gearbox
To prepare the vehicle for gearbox replacement, we park it on a flat and dry surface. Then, remove the negative battery cable from the terminal post on the battery.
Next, we remove the gear shifter handle or knob by twisting it counterclockwise until it comes off. After that, we remove the trim plate or console.
Then, we remove the bolts on the output shaft. The gearbox is a heavy and substantial item, so we make sure to support it as we remove it from your car.
Once the old gearbox is removed, we install the new gearbox. Finally, the mechanic reconnects the battery cable to complete the gearbox replacement process.
  • Water pump
To replace a water pump, we need the following tools and materials: a new water pump, gaskets, coolant, wrenches, and a catch pan.
Firstly, the mechanic loosens the petcock at the bottom of the radiator to drain the coolant into the catch pan.
Afterwards, the mechanic will disconnect the negative battery post and remove any parts that might obstruct access to the water pump such as the exhaust manifold, hoses, and belts.
Next, we remove the old water pump and clean the gasket surface. Once done, the mechanic will install the new water pump and replace the gasket.
We then reassemble the cooling system and reconnect the battery post. Then, the mechanic refills the cooling system with fresh coolant and checks for any leaks.
  • Air conditioning compressor
Derby Auro Mechanics will ensure the inspection of the condition of all the related systems, including but not limited to the ductwork and insulation.
  • Air filter
Regimented replacing of air filters relative to the mileage of the vehicle is a rule of thumb of Derby Auto Mechanics.
